Busting 5 Common
No one wants to deal with cellulite or stretch marks. Lines around your stomach, thighs, and legs and be bothersome, and can hurt your confidence, especially in the summer. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation on the internet about how you can get rid of cellulite. There are a lot of fake products, diets, and myths that circulate around every once in a while that have been debunked or have no scientific backing. Here are a few of the most common.
Curing Cellulite with Cardio
One of the most common myths is that you can handle your cellulite with exercise alone. Studies have shown that while cardio is great for cardiovascular health as well as losing weight, it has little to no effect on stimulating muscle growth or treating skin issues like cellulite. Although cellulite may be caused by weight gain, it is not cured by weight loss. Weight loss may prevent future cellulite and stretch marks, but scarred skin is not going to be affected by dieting and exercising alone.
That New Topical Cream
There is almost an endless amount of topical creams that claim they will make your cellulite disappear. To date, no topical cream has been shown to permanently decrease the visibility of cellulite. Many creams claim that they increase collagen and elastin production. However, most topical creams do not go beyond the epidermal layer of skin, because cellulite is deeper, creams cannot provide permanent results.
There is a lot of evidence against “detox” programs. Historically “detoxing” used to refer to rehabilitation for individuals who struggled with alcohol or other drugs. But in the early 2000s detoxing became a multi-billion dollar industry with trainers, guides, and special cleanse that people could try out. Many universities and doctors have warned about “detoxing” programs because there isn’t scientific evidence of how supposed toxin removal promotes better health. Although many detox methods actually have health benefits on their own (dieting for example) it is misleading to call those methods “detoxing”. In regards to cellulite, there is no evidence that cellulite is caused by an abundance of toxins in the body. Cellulite is caused when fat deposits under the skin push through connective tissue causing an unsmooth appearance.
Tanning To Get Rid Of Cellulite
This may be one of the most dangerous myths. Whereas other cellulite cures may not work but may promote a healthier lifestyle through dieting, exercise, and skincare regimens; tanning is actually detrimental to your skin. Tanning either via direct sunlight or from a tanning service can damage and dry out your skin causing more damage. The theory behind tanning is that it makes the cellulite or stretch marks appear faded in contrast to the tan skin. Even if that was true, tanned skin is not permanent and also is exceptionally dangerous due to health risks like skin cancer and melanoma.
Liposuction Can Get Rid of Cellulite
Compared to some of the other myths, liposuction is not as far fetched. However, liposuction runs into the same issue as diet and exercise. Liposuction surgery is designed to treat fat, not cellulite. Although removal of fat can decrease the risk of developing cellulite, once you have cellulite you need to treat the skin, not the fat.
So What Works Against Cellulite?
There are a variety of procedures that are actually proven to decrease the visibility of cellulite. The key is procedures that treat the subdermal layers of skin. Radiofrequency procedures as well as targeted pressure can help stimulate collagen production within the skin and deal with cellulite. Although cellulite may never be erased it’s visibility can be treated using either of these techniques.
